The Island attractions of Lanzarote & the local Area

Guime and the surrounding area:

Lanzarote Facts:

  • Average annual temperature: 81°c.
  • Average of 320 days of sun per year.
  • Only 4 hours flight from the U.K.

Our beautifully restored 200 year old finca nestles in the sleepy original Canarian village of Guime. The village has 1 bar 'the Socialdad'. a meeting place for the villagers. Within the village and just a few minutes walk from the property is a small friendly village delicatessen. They sell just about everything, freshly baked bread, meat, fish locally grown fruit and vegetables all fresh of course.

Many of the fields are covered with a distinctive layer of 'Pecon' (ground volcanic rock). Pecon absorbs the night dew and gives water to the plants and vegetation. It enables local farmers to grow, sweet corn, vegetables, grapes and fruit in abundance.

The upmarket marina Puerto Calero has a good selection of restaurants overlooking the harbour. Here you can enjoy some of the oceans finest and freshest produce or simply while away a few hours watching the world go by. For the more adventurous, deep sea fishing, submarine and catamaran trips can all be arranged locally.

Puerto del Carmen is the main tourist resort with copious amounts of bars, restaurants and night life! The white beach stretches for several miles.

Playa Blanca, a short drive from the finca offers quiet naturist beaches. A ferry can be taken for trips to the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura.

Timanfaya National Park Lanzarote

Timanfaya National Park:

The natural phenomenon of the Island are the fire mountains of the Timanfaya National Park. The park covers an area of 51sqkm. Created during the years 1730 - 1736 the eruptions transformed cultivated land into one of the largest lava fields created. The lava flows destroyed 12 villages though miraculously no one was killed. The landscape is now that of rich reds and ochre's with views across craters and lava formations. A trip with a guided tour to the park is highly recommended.

Cesar Manrique (1919-1992):

Perhaps the more than most the architect, artist & sculptor Cesar manrique helped Lanzarote retain its natural beauty and features. He prevented high rise buildings and used the natural habitat to enhance the islands beauty. Throughout the island there are reminders of the artist work with sculptures on roundabouts etc. His former home, now a museum, is also home to the Cesar Manrique Foundation which really is a must see attraction.

Museo Agricola El Patio:

A famous landmark is the windmill at the centre of this working farm and tourist attraction. Located near Teguise you can discover the agriculture of Lanzarote today and days gone by. Importantly you can taste many of the wines and cheeses produced on the farm.

Mirador del Rio:

Situated on the northern tip of the island, Mirador del Rio is yet another centre of art and culture that is well worth a visit. Positioned 480 metres above sea level the centre commands fantastic views across the ocean and the group of small islands known as the Archipielago Chinijo. Once again this centre is the brain child of Manrique and houses many pieces of his work. This venue is a totally relaxing yet at the same time stunning place to visit.

Jardin de Cactus:

The Jardin de Cactus is found on the outskirts of Guatiza, on the road to Mala. It is in this area where during more than a century the cochineal beetle has been cultivated - an insect which lives in the cactus and whose larva are used to produce the valuable natural colorant, cochineal. In this tourist centre, an abandoned 'rofe' (volcanic ash) quarry in the shape of an amphitheatre has been used, in whose terraces one can admire more than 10,000 different kinds of cacti from the Canary Islands, America and Madagascar.
